Scars on the skin occur when the skin is damaged. The scar tissue cells replace the damaged skin cells, usually reforming the even skin layer. Atrophic scars are different – these scars are indented, and the scar tissue is below the skin level. Acne or pockmark scars are common types of atrophic scars that can impact the texture and appearance of the skin. At Vantage Plastic Surgery, we offer atrophic scar removal at our clinics in NYC.
Acne, chicken pox and mole removal are the most common causes of atrophic scars. While these scars are not large, they can leave holes in the skin that are undesirable. The most common types of atrophic scars are the ice pick, rolling and boxcar scars, from small holes in the skin (ice pick) to formed indentations with defined or undefined edges (boxcar or rolling). Regardless of the type of atrophic scar, there are options to smooth the skin for a healthier, more attractive appearance.
Skin Treatments and Surgery for Atrophic Scars
Most atrophic scars can be treated with various types of skin resurfacing and collagen induction therapies. Chemical peels are a common treatment to remove damaged skin cells and spur the production of new skin to smooth the surface. Microneedling is another option for stimulating skin healing with collagen induction. Resurfacing and dermabrasion methods can also smooth the skin with either laser therapy or mechanical resurfacing.
Surgical options for atrophic scar removal can be used for deep scars that do not respond to other treatments. Both punch excision and subcision techniques can be used to remove the scar tissue and then close the wound. This can be effective for deeper atrophic scars that are too pronounced to respond to skin resurfacing.
One other treatment to hide atrophic scars is dermal fillers. While they do not remove the scar, dermal fillers can smooth a deep atrophic scar to improve the appearance of the skin for several months or more.
